The Masters Tournament® has a long-lived legacy as one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments. Starting back in 1934 and progressing on today, Augusta National® has seen many champions walk onto its course.
These Green Jacket Champions are nothing short of legendary and as we count down to The Masters® 2018, we will uncover the story behind them all.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, Harmon proved himself in the world of golf early on when he qualified for the U.S. Amateur at the age of 15. He had a successful career, which included being a semi-finalist in the PGA Championship three times and finishing third at the 1959 U.S. Open, which was held at his home course, Winged Foot, to which he became the head professional of the course later in his career. Harmon also worked as the Winter Professional at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida and as the head professional at Thunderbird Country Club in Palm Springs, California, where he worked for over 10 years.
1948 Masters Tournament
During the 1948 Masters Golf Tournament, Claude Harmon shot a 279 tying the tournament record set by Ralph Guldahl in 1939. Harmon finished five strokes ahead of runner-up Cary Middlecoff, setting his own record of largest margin of victory for the tournament. In front of over 10,000 spectators, Harmon collected a $2,500 price and later in his career reveled over his only major victory throughout his career.
