In less than a week the UFC will invade Dallas for UFC 171! This is the 7th time that the UFC will be held in Texas and just the 2nd time in Dallas.

At UFC 171 the vacated welterweight title will be up for grabs as Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler look to duke it out in the Octagon for the championship. The rest of the main card will be just as exciting with a lineup that’s sure to entertain MMA fans!

Let’s take a closer look to see who will emerge on top and what they’ll need to secure the win. Without further ado, here is our UFC 171 main card preview.

Hendricks vs Lawler

“Bigg Rigg” Hendricks has the upper hand in the striking department (no pun intended) and is all around better at both taking fighters down and defending against takedowns.

“Ruthless” Lawler on the other hand is coming off 2013 surging, and without a loss. He has heavy hands and a significantly longer reach which can help keep him a safer distance away from Hendricks, but not enough that he’ll be able to neutralize Hendrick’s superior striking abilities. Lawler’s best chance of winning the title will be to exercise patience and land a heavy shot.

As former champ GSP predicted:

“It's a fight where anything can happen. Both guys can put each other to sleep. They have a lot of power in striking, but I believe Hendricks has the edge in this fight because I believe he will come more well-prepared with his team and he's got an edge in the grappling department.”

Condit vs Woodley

This welterweight co-main event will pit “Natural Born Killer” Condit against “The Chosen One” Woodley. While Woodley was granted this match after campaigning heavily on social media, it proves to be a fun matchup.

These fighters have opposing skill sets; Woodley has a strong wrestling component to his game while Condit is better on the ground. Condit is a volume puncher, while Woodley prefers accurate power punches.

As for the fight itself, Condit is better at knocking opponents out. Woodley gets gassed past the 3rd round typically, so if Condit can tire him out the match should be his. One thing’s for certain this is going to be an explosive fight!

Sanchez vs Jury

The first ever Ultimate Fighter winner Diego Sanchez (24-6) will take on the undefeated Myles Jury at UFC 171.

Anyone who’s ever seen a Sanchez fight knows that he takes it all the way to the end and leaves everything in the Octagon. “The Dream” Sanchez is a significantly better striker and excellent at defending takedowns, so Jury will need to give it all he’s got to win this matchup.

Jury’s ability to win in variety of ways will be interesting to watch playout. He’s much younger, but as we’ve seen Sanchez is not easily gassed. We’re predicting this one comes down to a decision, which way it goes is hard to say!

Shields vs Lombard

The welterweight division will be on display come March 15th, as these top 15 fighters face off. Shields defeated Maia and Woodley in 2013 to climb to the #6 position in his division. Lombard is also coming off a win against Nate Marquardt and is currently ranked at #12.

Shields is well aware of the power that his opponent can deliver and isn’t interested in trading shots. Instead his game plan will be to take the match to the ground and go for a submission or ground and pound. For Lombard, a win would move him up in this highly competitive division. Either way the winner of this fight will likely be looking at a number 1 contender matchup.

Saint Preux vs Krylov

OSP takes on Nikita “Al Capone” Krylov to kick of UFC 171’s main card matches. The 14-5 OSP is streaking having won both of his matchups in 2013. Krylov just secured a round victory in January over Walt Harris and turns his attention to his newest opponent.

For St. Preux the key to victory will be using his long reach to keep Krylov at a distance while connecting on powerful kicks and jabs. If he can connect early on this fight could be another KO victory under his belt and possible top 15 ranking in the light heavyweight division.

The 22 year old Krylov, has already proven to be something of a submission expert with 10 of 16 wins coming via submission. Because of OSP’s reach advantage taking this fight to the ground will be his best channel to victory.

How do you think our predictions will stack up coming UC 171? Who do you have winning in the main card fights?
