Reigning world champion Marc Marquez is at it again, winning the MotoGP opener in Qatar this past weekend. It turned out to be a battle of the ages, the young champion against the motorcycling racing legend, Valentino Rossi.

Despite doubts due to a broken ankle weeks before the opener, Marc Marquez picked up exactly where he left off last year. He took control in his Repsol Honda with nine of the 22 laps remaining but Rossi was quickly on his tail in his classic Yamaha. The race was neck and neck with the lead switching riders until Marquez pushed to 100%, gaining the lead entering the final lap.

The 21 year old had lost his pole advantage just seconds after the race started, making the victory even sweeter. Marquez told BT Sport, "I enjoyed a lot that race, especially after the injury. I didn't expect that race, honestly. But yesterday I had a good feeling and today the last lap with Valentino, I didn't think about the leg and the injury”.

Even though Rossi didn’t win, he had his reasons to smile. "I was a little bit not precise in my mind because I said, 'What do I do? Do I attack?'" Rossi told BT Sport. "But starting from 10th, second is a great result.”

On the other hand, Rossi’s teammate, Jorge Lorenzo did not have any reasons to smile. The two-time MotoGP world champion and last year’s winner in Qatar, crashed in just the first lap. Luckily, he was unhurt and will be racing April 13th in Austin.
