The 2014 MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix is in the history books with a win for Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo, but the real topic of conversation is that Honda rider Marc Marquez has clinched his second MotoGP Championship victory!

Regardless of coming in second place at Motegi, Marquez has secured enough of a points gap in the standings to officially be announced the 2014 MotoGP Champion! This was due to the finishing places of Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi who were next in the standings behind Marquez. If these two had finished higher in the standings at the Japanese Grand Prix, a podium finish might not have been enough for Marquez's triumph. Marquez needed to finish ahead of Pedrosa, lose no more than 15 points to Lorenzo and no more than three points Rossi to be named champion.

The Battle at Motegi

Moto-Experiences-MotoGP-VIP-Village-2014-Racing-9-1Needless to say, the battle at Motegi was not an easy one for Marquez - Lorenzo and Rossi came to challenge the Spaniard. Marquez lost time off the line, finding himself in fifth place, and Rossi managed to surge into first place into the first turn. Marquez managed to pass Pedrosa, Andrea Iannone and Pol Espargaro on the opening laps and moved up to play with Lorenzo, who had moved to first, and Rossi.

Marquez quickly overtook Andrea Dovizioso and found himself up in the top three with Rossi and Lorenzo leading.

Rossi and Marquez alternated positions speeding through the corners of Motegi and the pair were racing aggressively. However, Marquez kept his composure and managed to make his way past Rossi on Lap 9. Lorenzo had already secured a large enough lead at this point that he was untouchable to Marquez, but it didn't matter. The Spaniard accomplished what he needed to.

This is now the second championship win in a row for the 21-year-old, in the second successive season.

With the Honda rider's incredibly consistent victories throughout the 2014 season it became apparent Marquez was hunting down a second championship. MotoGP fans began to wonder 'when,' not 'if,' this title announcement would be made.

The Current MotoGP Standings

Even though Marquez has secured the Championship title already, there are still three races left to go on the 2014 calendar so fans don't have to kiss the MotoGP season good-bye as of yet. Take a look at where the rest of the riders fall on the standings at the Japanese Grand Prix before they head into Australia!
