The America’s Cup is making its way back to New York, and fans are ready for it. This triumphant return is highly-anticipated and long overdue (about 96 years to be exact). With all of the excitement around the event, we wanted to fill you in on a few things you might want to know about the race. Read below to learn more about the America’s Cup New York.
The America’s Cup will return to New York for the first time in 96 years. From 1870 through 1920, racing took place off New York but then was moved to Newport, Rhode Island where it remained until the U.S. lost the Cup in 1983, ending the longest winning streak.
Since then, the America’s Cup has taken place in Perth, Australia; San Diego, USA; Auckland, New Zealand; Valencia, Spain; and San Francisco, USA.
The Event Village will be in the Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza while the racing will be on the lower Hudson River off the Battery Park City Esplanade. Brookfield Place is located at 230 Vesey Street, along the Hudson River waterfront and across from the Statue of Liberty.
Liberty Landing Marina will host the teams compound including bases for all six teams.
Ben Ainslie led his Land Rover BAR team to victory by two points over ORACLE TEAM USA at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in Oman. This second place finish for ORACLE TEAM USA gave them their fourth consecutive podium although the team has yet to win.
Emirates New Zealand finished in third to retain its place at the top of the leaderboard with ORACLE TEAM USA close behind in second place, only trailing by six points. New York is up next on the 2016 schedule – will we see any movement in the standings?
