What in the Wide World of Sports Went on at the 2013 NBA Draft

Expect the Unexpected

As predicted by most experts, the 2013 NBA Draft was unpredictable.

The tone was set early by Cleveland Cavaliers who selected first in last night's Draft. After they were put on the clock by NBA Commissioner David Stern, the Cavs brought down the house by selecting Anthony Bennett with the Number 1 pick.

The crowd, draft announcers, and draft hopefuls collectively gasped at the Cavaliers pick, which was the first of many surprises throughout the night.

Nerlens Noel, who topped many expert's mock draft, watched the first five picks go by before being selected by the New Orleans Pelicans with the sixth pick. Before the Kentucky standout could come to grip with his new team, he was promplty traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Trading would be a theme of the 2013 NBA Draft. With a limited number of star powered players and a strong 2014 Draft Class on the horizon, there were rumors that this year's Draft could have a lot of trade activity.

The rumors were true!

Overall, there were 16 draft-related trades that occurred last night, which is 10 more than in 2012.

The biggest blockbuster trade was between the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets. The Celtics traded two of their big stars, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, along with Jason Terry to the Brooklyn Nets for Gerald Wallace, Reggie Evans, Kris Humphries, Keith Bogans, and three future first-round picks.

With a strong draft class in 2014, the Celtics are looking to rebuild by stocking future talent. The Nets, however, are looking to make it to the NBA Finals in Jason Kidd's first year as head coach, and are hoping to catch fire in a bottle with the ageing Pierce and Garnett.

Okay. As you can tell by who is writing this blog, I lost the bet.

My fellow coworkers are far superior Draft Experts and I should leave the Draft analysis to them. Nice work ladies!

As I lick my wounds, I have to admit, our mock drafts faired pretty well against some of the world's best "Draft Experts."

Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix picked one correct pick in his final mock draft CBSSports.com's Matt Moore picked zero correct in last night's Draft. So, not to brag, but I'm proud of my team for beating some of the experts with their excellent draft analysis!

Here is an overview of last night's First Round draft results along with our Blogger's final mock draft. (highlighted are the correct picks by our Bloggers)
