WHAT A WEEK 1! For those of you who watched Thursday Night’s game in delight [or shock] the rest of the weekend turned out to be quite a doozy as well. With the first official weekend of NFL football (and NFL Fantasy Football) in the books we bring you our Week 1 Busts and Surprises and Hot Picks for Week 2.
Week 1 Busts
Dez Bryant, WR Dallas Cowboys
Many people were shocked that, despite the close win against the Giants, Bryant did not put up the type of Week 1 fantasy numbers many had anticipated. Instead of a projected 16 fantasy points, Bryant finished with just 2 points with a stat line of 4 carries for 22 yards.
CJ Spiller, RB Buffalo Bills
Another big Week 1 bust, the Buffalo Bills running back was expected to have a giant Week 1 fantasy game but instead had a poor showing in the Bills 21-23 loss to the New England Patriots. With 41 yards on 17 carries and a fumble, CJ’s owners were spilling tears wondering what happened to their top 10 pick.
Maurice Jones Drew, RB Jacksonville Jaguars
No one really knew what to expect from the new Kansas City Chiefs offense (or defense), but the Jaguars, MJD, found out that when your offense has trouble with throwing consistency your opponent will stop your run game dead in its tracks. MJD finished the day with 45 yards on 15 carries to the dismay of his fantasy owners.
David Wilson, RB New York Giants
Going into Week 1 as the clear choice for the New York Giants number one running back, fantasy owners of David Wilson were in for a surprise, as he had just 7 carries for 19 yards, two fumbles and was benched at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. With a lack of depth at the RB position, the Giants will be looking to pick up a veteran back to help mold Wilson (or to fill his spot).
Week 1 Surprises
Julian Edelman, WR New England Patriots
If Julian Edelman is still available in your league, RUN, don’t walk, to your nearest computer and try to claim him off waivers. Edelman racked up 79 yards off of 7 receptions, and connected with Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady for 2 touchdowns. If anyone had the foresight to start him, feel free to gloat about this for the rest of the season.
Julius Thomas, TE Denver Broncos
As of about 2 hours ago Julius Thomas was owned in 7.6% of fantasy leagues, right now he’s owned in 48%...50%...52%...54%... (see where this is going?) After posting a 110 yard, 2 touchdown game, he’s our pick for biggest surprise of the week.
Peyton Manning, QB Denver Broncos
462 yard passing, 7 TDs, 141.1 QB rating. I think we’re all still in shock. Not because he was good (he’s Peyton Manning, he’s always good) but because he was great. The reason that this performance was a surprise is because after an emotional AFC divisional double-overtime loss, to come back and win in record breaking fashion, not many people could’ve predicted it.
Reggie Bush, RB Detroit Lions
ESPN had Bush at a solid 22nd in their RB draft analysis, no one was really sure what to expect from him. But fantasy owners of Bush were delighted when he put up almost 200 all purpose yards including 2 TDs. If he stays healthy this season he could end the season as a top 10 RB.
Off the Waiver Wire
With injuries and banged up players, already a concern for some fantasy owners we’ve put together some pick ups that may come in handy for your Week 2 matchups.
Joique Bell, RB Detroit Lions
Week 1 stud, Reggie Bush, appears to be the Lions #1 choice at the RB position, but that didn’t stop his teammate, Bell from picking up 92 yards and 2 touchdowns of his own. If you’re in trouble for Week 2, Bell will be a solid pick up.
Jonathan Dwyer, RB Pittsburgh Steelers
Starting Steelers RB LaRod Stephens-Howling sustained a season-ending injury on Sunday, and with no other options they will be looking to Dwyer, last season’s leading rusher for the Steelers, to fill in. If you had Stephens-Howling or Le’Veon Bell (out with foot sprain) Dwyer should be on your waiver wire this week.
Brandon Jacobs, RB New York Giants
After Sunday night’s performance the Giants will be looking to pick up the slack at RB and have announced that they will be re-signing Brandon Jacobs. If you have David Wilson and need a quick fill for this week, Brandon Jacobs is your guy.
Brian Hartline, WR Miami Dolphins
Our last pickup for Week 2 was also another huge Week 1 surprise. Hartline finished Sunday with 114 yards and a touchdown. Defenses will look to double receiver Mike Wallace leaving Hartline with one-on-one coverage and if Sunday was any indication Ryan Tannehill will be capitalizing on that matchup every time.
