[UFC Series] Meet the Champions: Ronda Rousey

Our very first UFC champion is UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey. Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey is a first in many ways, including being the first female fighter to sign with the UFC and the first UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion. Rousey will be defending her title at the upcoming UFC 168 event in Las Vegas.

  1. Rousey is the consensus #1 pound-for-pound female MMA fighter in the world according to several MMA publications. 

  2. She is the first UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion 

  3. She has used the armbar to defeat all of her opponents in the first round

  4. In 2008 at the Beijing Summer Games, she became the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in Judo

  5. Rousey is scheduled to make her film debut in the movies The Expendables 3 and Fast & Furious 7

  6. Her nickname “Rowdy” got the seal of approval from WWE pro wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

  7. Like mother, like daughter: Rousey’s mother was also a judoka and became the first American to win a World Judo Championship in 1984

  8. Rousey began her MMA career at 22, she’s currently 26 years old and was born on February 1st, 1987

  9. A former vegan, Rousey is currently on a Paleo/Warrior diet mix

  10. Rousey served as a coach in The Ultimate Fighter 18, making it the first time the show has had female coaches and contestants

Fight Style and Records

An accomplished judoka and master of submission, Rousey added boxing to her arsenal when she teamed up with former undefeated boxing and kickboxing champion, Lucia Rijker, as her coach. “Rowdy” Rousey is also known as one of the first women to introduce trash talking into her MMA fights.

Rousey is currently undefeated having won all 7 of her MMA matches in the first round by an armbar submission. (We’re impressed) The average length of her first round is a mind blowing 1 minute and 46 seconds. That’s the average!

Rousey’s victory against Miesha Tate on March 3rd 2012 via armbar submission won her the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship. After signing with the UFC, she was announced as the first UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion.
