The NBA All-Star Game is a place where fashion, sports, and music collide. Part of the appeal of the weekend is that everyone is on hand to see the best of the best from the NBA compete during this epic sports weekend.
Every once in a while you might even see someone who’s more than a man, more than a myth, maybe even a legend, and NBA Events brings you just that. Making another appearance at 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend will be one of the most dominant centers to ever play the game: NBA Legend, Darryl Dawkins.
• Dawkins was nicknamed “Chocolate Thunder” by Stevie Wonder
• At 18 years and 289 days he was the youngest 76ers player ever
• His career stat line reads: 8,733 points, 4,432 rebounds, 1,032 blocks
• He was drafted out of high school
• Dawkins shattered two backboards in the 1979 season
• He often named his dunks and made up his own nicknames
• After the NBA Dawkins played for a short time with the Harlem Globetrotter
• He also went on to become the head coach for several non-NBA teams
At a towering 6’11” Dawkins entered the NBA as the 5th overall pick in the 1975 Draft with the Philadelphia 76ers. Coming straight out of high school, he played a limited role for the Sixers in his first two seasons to develop his raw skill and talent.
In his 3rd season he found a regular role coming off the bench and averaged a .575 shooting percentage, second in the league that year. The next season he became a starter for the team.
His career highlights include consistently averaging double digit points in all except his first two seasons. He is also known for his powerful dunks including two which shattered the backboard and led to the NBA adoption of breakaway rims.
Dawkins dunks were a crowd favorite and he took to naming them. He also had fun by making up his own nicknames. Some of these self-proclaimed nicknames included: Dr. Dunkenstein and Sir Slam.
His first backboard shattering dunk in 1979 he dubbed, The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump-Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam, Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam. He named other dunks as well: the Rim Wrecker, the Go-Rilla, the Look Out Below, the In-Your-Face Disgrace, the Cover Your Head, the Yo-Mama, and the Spine-Chiller Supreme.
If you weren’t lucky enough to witness any of these dunks, through video magic we’re bringing you a compilation of his 20 greatest dunks:
In addition to being a force on the court, Dawkins has a fun personality. He maintains a twitter account where you can catch glimpses of his fun loving ways:
