NBA Career

At a towering 6’11” Dawkins entered the NBA as the 5th overall pick in the 1975 Draft with the Philadelphia 76ers. Coming straight out of high school, he played a limited role for the Sixers in his first two seasons to develop his raw skill and talent.

In his 3rd season he found a regular role coming off the bench and averaged a .575 shooting percentage, second in the league that year. The next season he became a starter for the team.

His career highlights include consistently averaging double digit points in all except his first two seasons. He is also known for his powerful dunks including two which shattered the backboard and led to the NBA adoption of breakaway rims.

Dr. Dunkenstein

Dawkins dunks were a crowd favorite and he took to naming them. He also had fun by making up his own nicknames. Some of these self-proclaimed nicknames included: Dr. Dunkenstein and Sir Slam.

His first backboard shattering dunk in 1979 he dubbed, The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump-Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam, Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam. He named other dunks as well: the Rim Wrecker, the Go-Rilla, the Look Out Below, the In-Your-Face Disgrace, the Cover Your Head, the Yo-Mama, and the Spine-Chiller Supreme.
