The third returns from NBA All-Star 2014 balloting were announced yesterday and it’s shaping up to be some interesting lineups indeed. The leading vote-getters, however, are not the interesting of the returns, but rather the players who are missing.
As of January 9, 2014 the returns have the starting lineup for the Eastern Conference as:
LeBron James (1,076,063)
Paul George (899,671)
Carmelo Anthony (702,869)
Dwyane Wade (718,109)
Kyrie Irving (652,522)
While none of these names should surprise anyone, the absence of some players makes for an interesting 2014 NBA All-Star Game. In the past three years either Rajon Rondo or Derrick Rose has started at point guard for the East. This year (if the voting continues on trend) it will be Irving taking over starting point guard responsibilities in the game.
The Western Conference returns stand as:
Kevin Durant (1,054,209)
Dwight Howard (509,116)
Blake Griffin (500,964)
Kobe Bryant (844,538)
Stephen Curry (677,372)
Bryant was recently in the news, thanking fans for their support, but also urging them to vote for players who are not injured.
"My advice would be to vote for some of the younger players, the Damian Lillards of the world, because they're more than deserving to be out there and playing that weekend."
– Kobe Bryant
Of course, this would not be the first time a player who’s unable to participate in the game has been voted in. If Bryant remains a starter when the 2014 NBA-All Star game is played (likely) the NBA Commissioner, David Stern, will select a replacement. In fact, in 2010 Bryant was unable to play due to an ankle injury and was replaced by All-Star Jason Kidd.
On another note, the third front court position that was created (while the center position has been removed) will make for an interesting matchup. If the voting stands through All-Star weekend, it will mean that LeBron James will be matching up against Dwight Howard, which should make this an even more exciting NBA All-Star Game!
