After suffering a groin injury, Dominic Cruz was forced to withdraw from the unification match that was originally slated for UFC 169 and vacate his title.

Instead, Faber will get a shot at the belt against current champion Barao for the undisputed bantamweight title. For Faber it means not just an opportunity to become a UFC champion but also means redemption from the last time these two met. Barao will look to extend his run as the UFC men’s bantamweight champion and continue his impressive 31-fight win streak.

Urijah Faber

Faber is looking to avenge his loss from UFC 149. He lost by unanimous decision in the five-round battle. During the first round when they last met, Faber suffered a rib injury and was limited in his movement for the remainder of the fights.

Faber is one of the most active fighters in the UFC having had five fights in past 11 months. This most recent bout comes on short notice (less than four weeks to be exact). He is currently on a 4-match win streak and has a record of 30-6-0.

Having a strong wrestling background, he has added excellent jiu-jitsu and striking to make him a very unique fighter. His exceptional submissions, strong takedowns, takedown defenses and general ground abilities will be key if he wants to come out victorious. Faber has also cited in recent interviews that his performance in UFC 149 was “lackluster” and that he intends to provide a fight where both fighters get “a little dirty”.

"I just wasn't excited about that [UFC 149]Barao fight at all.
Well, I'm excited about this [UFC 169] fight. That's the big difference."

Renan Barao

A 3-1 favorite and considered by many the top pound-for-pound bantamweight fighter, Barao will be looking to extend one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MMA history. He has a streak that extends 8 year and 5 months to 2005 when he lost his first and only match.

Barao’s background includes muay thai and Brazilian jiu jitsu. He has an arsenal that includes strong leg kicks and powerful combinations to go along with his long limbs and reach; something that he took advantage of in his previous bout with Faber. With Barao’s win streak, and victory over Faber in their last meeting many feel the odds are in his favor. We will all have to wait until February 1 to find out together.
