“Historic”, “classic”, “epic”, “un-freaking-believable” are all appropriate adjectives to describe the UFC® 171 event. Fans who came to Dallas for last night’s events were treated to one of the best fight nights in recent UFC history.

With several huge upsets, a new champion and a stacked main card UFC® 171 was, in my opinion, the best event of the 2014 to date. Johny Hendricks walked away as the new welterweight champion after an instant classic against Robbie Lawler that went the distance, Myles Jury pulled out an impressive win against Diego Sanchez, and Carlos Condit left the Octagon with a loss and devastating ACL injury.

Read on for the full UFC® 171 recap, but first check out what you missed from the UFC VIP Experience!

Fighter Q and A

UFC VIP Experience guests were given reserved seating at a jam-packed UFC® 171 fighter Q and A. Fans were expecting lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and got more than they bargained for when he came out with top featherweight contender Chad Mendes!

Both fighters entertained the crowd by answering any and every question. From queries about their most heartbreaking losses, to requests to remove their shirts (many females fans were in attendance!) both Pettis and Mendes obliged and amused fans!

Fighter Weigh-Ins

Then it was time for the highly anticipated weigh-ins in front of a packed out Gilley’s Dallas Ballroom crowd. The Octagon girls along with Dana White, Joe Rogan and others all occupied the stage as the prelim card fighters were called up to be weighed and face their opponents. Three fighters did not make weight, but the story of the day was Hendricks being over 1.8 pounds before his championship bout.

At the second weigh-in Hendricks was able to make his 170-weight along with Kevin Gastelum, while Renee Forte opted out of a second attempt and forfeited 20% of his fight purse.

After weigh-ins, UFC VIP Experience guests got an amazing behind the scenes tour during which they had a meet and greet with Mendes, Pettis, women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Cain Velasquez!

Fight Night and more!

Saturday dawned in Dallas to a gloomy and overcast day—basically the perfect weather for a fight night! For UFC VIP Experience guests, fight day is more than just the fights, they arrived to the arena around 3 PM to experience some epic extras!

First UFC VIP Experience guests took part in an exclusive Octagon tour. They sat in the first row while fighters warmed up, and they took their shoes off to enter the actual Octagon! Each took a turn holding and posing with the championship belt while fighters warmed up around them. Then they had the opportunity to walk around the octagon, feel the cage and take pictures to their heart’s content.

Once the tour was over guests headed to the exclusive UFC VIP Experience hospitality party lounge. They were greeted by a snacks, a full buffet of gourmet food and open bar beverage options. Then the fighters and UFC personalities started filing in.

With the preliminary fights playing on all TVs, guests were hosted by UFC fighters Phil Davis, Matt Hughes, Uriah Hall, Jeremy Stevens, Forrest Griffin, Eric Perez, and Nate Diaz! They also were treated to appearances by ring girls Arianny Celeste, Vanessa Hanson, Brittany Palmer and UFC host Kenda Perez!

The party wrapped at 9 PM and guests headed to their cage side seats for the main card! I won’t go through all the details but Tyron Woodley and Myles Jury surprised many by pulling off impressive wins. While three of the fights went the distance not a single fan was disappointed as they were all battles where fighters left everything in the cage.
