A Look Back at Reed’s Storied Career

Andre Reed joined the Buffalo Bill’s organization after being drafted in the fourth round as the 86th overall selection in the 1985 NFL Draft. During his time at Kutztown University, he gained attention from the NFL for his speed and durability as a wide receiver.

In his new NFL home with the Bills, Reed was able to make an almost immediate impact, and his incredible play and NFL records still stand today. He is considered one of the greatest “yards after catch” receiver -a trait that NFL teams, to this day, find invaluable. After his tenure as a Bill he spent his final year in the league with the Washington Redskins before retiring in 2000.

Career Stats

Here are some stats on Reed’s NFL career:

  • Seven-time Pro Bowl Selection (1988 – 1994)
  • Four-time AFC Champion (Five AFC Championship game starts)
  • 951 total career receptions, the 10th highest in NFL history
  • Four seasons with over 1,000 yards receiving
  • 87 touchdowns, 11th highest in NFL history and tied with Bills running back Thurman Thomas
  • Ninth most career receiving yards in NFL history with 13,198 (13,095 with the Bills, a team record)
  • Played in four consecutive Super Bowls (1991-1994)
  • Season career highs with 90 receptions (1994), ten touchdowns (1991) 1,312 receiving yards (1989)
  • 13 seasons with 50 plus receptions (including nine consecutive seasons)

The Comeback Game

There aren’t many instances where an inductee can look to one of the many games in their career and point to it as his greatest. Maybe Bills fans and Reed himself would disagree, but we believe this is his greatest game, and similarly is ranked by many experts as one of the NFL’s greatest comebacks.

During the 1992 AFC Wild Card game, the Bills squared off against the Houston Oilers, who were able to to build a 32 point lead against the Bills. Many thought this game was over, including the Buffalo faithful fans (many of whom left for the parking lot), but the Bills managed to stage one of the greatest comebacks in NFL post game history.

Buffalo Bills backup quarterback came into the game and turned this AFC Wild Card matchup around. He connected with Don Beebe, then with Andre Reed for three more touchdowns (a total of four) to bring the game to 38-35. The Oilers were able to nail a field goal to send the game to overtime, but Buffalo walked away with a 41-38 victory. One that future Pro Football Hall of Famer Andre Reed was pivotal in securing.
