Congratulations once again to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2014. These seven players’ careers and contribution to the sport, serve as validation for their enshrinement and induction into this prolific Hall of Fame.
To learn more about each enshrinee in the 2014 class:
How did they get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame though? Were names drawn out of a hat? Did they blindfold an old sage and have him throw darts at balloons filled with names?? WHO CAN REVEAL THESE SECRETS?
Well now that you mention it, it’s not really a secret! Read on to learn exactly how the nomination process is conducted!
Nominating a Future Pro Football Hall of Famer
Believe it or not, just about anyone can nominate a player, coach or contributor to be considered. Meaning that you and I, average, everyday NFL fans can submit a nomination!
There aren’t any forms, you simply write to the Pro Football Hall of Fame!
What, next? Obviously not every entry is going to make it, so there are three preliminary lists before the committee gets to their final preliminary list.
In the first list all the initial nominations are compiled and sent to the Selection Committee by March 1. This list is screened to make sure all players and coaches are eligible (must be five years retired), then the selectors can study the list and include anyone they feel may have been looked over. Included in this list are modern-era nominees from the previous year’s final list, who received at least four votes in balloting.
The second list is received sometime in September and includes nominees from the first list, as well as any additional nominations since the first list was compiled. (Still with me?!)
The third list is sent to the Hall of Fame selection Committee in October, and they vote on the 25 Modern Era semifinalists.
Once the final preliminary list with 25 semifinalists are ready they’re distributed to the Committee again in November to select 15 Modern Era Nominees. The 16th and 17th finalists are recommended by the Seniors Committee. In February the Committee goes through the rigorous process of taking the list from 15 to 10 (moving on requires an 80% vote), senior candidates are voted on separately but also require an 80% vote. Then the vote must reduce the finalists from 10 to five with the remaining five candidates requiring an individual yes or no vote for membership.
