The NFL is on the rise in London – this isn’t new information. We’ve all watched as the NFL took on London with one game, held outside the regular season, and now it’s emerged into a three-game series at Wembley Stadium. This alone is a record football fans didn’t see coming after record two games were held overseas in the 2013 season.
But where did the NFL International Series come from? How has it grown into its own empire in London? Will the NFL continue to bring more regular season games to international soil? Will the NFL create a franchise in the United Kingdom?
All great questions – questions you’re about to have answered!
The Growth of the NFL International Series
The NFL has a deep history in hosting games outside the United States, but it wasn’t until 2005 that the International Series was formed. (Before 2005, the NFL hosted an American Bowl, which was a series of preseason games played worldwide.)
This first International Game, held in Mexico City under the name of NFL Futbol Americano, drew in the NFL’s highest game attendance at the time. Naturally due to the success of the game, the NFL decided the continue bringing regular season games to international soil and just had to figure out its next target.
Two years later, almost to the date, the NFL kicked-off its first game in London between the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium! In 2008 season, the NFL brought two regular season games out of the United States, back to London and to Toronto. Through 2011, this method continued.
In 2012, only one regular season game made its way across the pond to London for the International Series: the New England Patriots vs the St. Louis Rams.
The following year, the record was met again with two International Games. However, this time, both were held in London. Finally, this year, the NFL is returning and making history again with three regular season games being hosted abroad!

Fact or Myth: Will the NFL Start a Franchise in London?
Unfortunately, the answer this query is not clear as night and day. While fans in the United Kingdom have shown support of a franchise in London by the high attendance at all the International Series games, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has made it clear that the best thing for the NFL will be done.
With that being said, the idea of an international franchise is not being ruled out and is something that is being talked about often.
“You are proving you are worthy of a franchise,” is what Goodell last said to European fans according to espn.com.
