Sure, everyone knows the Pro Football Hall of Fame inducts members into the Hall each year that are worthy of such an honor, but who is it that decides who is Hall of Fame worthy? Better yet, what makes a candidate Hall of Fame worthy?

Well, folks, it’s time to find out. Keep reading as we walk you through the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, the selection process and reveal how you can attend the 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival in Canton, Ohio this Aug. to see the Class of 2014 inducted!

The Selection Committee

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee is made up of 46 members who are charged with the grueling task of ensuring the new enshrinees are the finest the game has produced! The Selection Committee is comprised of one media representative from each pro football city, two coming from New York, and one member who is a representative of the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA).

The final 13 delegates are all at-large delegates.

Each member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee serves an open-ended term and only through retirement or resignation can they be removed, provided the member attends meetings regularly. The only exception of this rule is the lone PFWA member who is only appointed for a two-year term.

The Selection Committee meets annually at the end of the NFL season, typically the time of the Super Bowl, to elect new members into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Selection Process

So how do they decide who is Hall of Fame worthy? And how many people can they induct each year? Well, there is not a set number for the amount of members the Hall of Fame can induct each year, the Committee strives to keep the classes between four and seven members.

Each candidate is scrutinized and in order to be selected in the enshrinee class, he must receive at least 80 percent of approval from the Selection Committee at the annual meeting. Once they meet, the Committee holds a roster of 17 finalists to be discussed.

To ensure that this final roster of candidates holds both older and newer suggestions, the Seniors Committee, a group of nine veteran members of the Selection Committee, are required to name two nominees from the pre-1988 era. The other candidates are nominated via fan-vote and mail ballot.

Fans can vote simply by writing the Pro Football Hall of Fame and explaining their nomination selection.
