Nothing like a (great) boat joke to kick off the excitement surrounding the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show! In a few months, people from around the globe will gather at the world’s largest in-water International boat show in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Whether you are familiar with the boat show or are new to the event, we have thrilling news about how the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show will be elevated this fall. Below, you can dive right into the history of the Boat Show and then learn about the exclusive access you can have while you’re there.
The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is the world’s largest International boat show, covering seven locations and over three million square feet of space. Exhibits range from yacht builders and designers to exotic cars and brokerage yachts. You can enjoy a wide variety of boat and sea vessel displays including runabouts, sport fishers, high performance boats, luxurious superyachts and more. With over 1,400 exhibitors showcasing events and displays, the Convention Center transforms into a marine playground.
The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show began in 1959 when a group of manufacturers and dealers were looking for a way to sell their boats. Former city mayor, Robert O. Cox, was instrumental in starting the Boat Show and reviving the Marine Advisory Board, later known as the Marine Industries Association. As it has since its integration in 1959, the Marine Industries Association of South Florida still owns the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
The Boat Show went through a series of changes in names, locations and dates over the years. However, 1976 was a monumental year as Show Management (also known as Yachting Promotions) formed and three major changes occurred that have been influential in the Boat Show’s current success. First, the show was renamed the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Second, show dates were moved to the fall, after manufacturers had released new year production models. Third, the show moved to its current location, the Bahia Mar Resort and Yachting Center. This was also the year the first boat show program was implemented.
By 1985, the Boat Show boasted over 900 exhibits and was gaining worldwide stature while commonly being referred to as the “greatest show on the water.” The show grew considerably and expanded over the coming years. By the 50th anniversary of the show, six separate distinct areas encompassed the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, covering approximately seven acres. Today, the Boat Show measures 9/10th of a mile, and it forces aerial photography of the whole show to be taken from over 3,000 feet overhead.
The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show draws people from all over the world and from all different backgrounds. At the show, you may run into professional athletes, movie stars, presidents, foreign dignitaries and other famous celebrities. Attendance continues to be on the rise, rain or shine, and there’s no doubt the show will continue to grow over the next several years.
