The Masters Tournament® has a long-lived legacy as being one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments. Starting back in 1934 and progressing on today, Augusta National® has seen many champions walk onto its course.

These Green Jacket Champions are nothing short of legendary and as we count down to The Masters 2018, we will uncover the story behind them all.

    Jimmy Demaret

Demaret was known for his flamboyant personality both on and off the course. With his bright-colored clothing he wore during tournaments he was quickly referred to as “The Wardrobe”. While on the PGA Tour he would frequently stop at local nightclubs to display his talent as a comedian and baritone singing voice.

Jimmy Demaret won 31 PGA Tour events between 1937 and 1957, and was the first professional golfer to win The Masters® three times, receiving the title in 1940, 1947 and 1950.

    1940 Masters

Winning by four-strokes, Demaret beat out fellow Texan, Lloyd Mangrum, who opened the tournament with a course record of 64. Demaret parred the first 14 holes, added a two-putt birdie on the 15th, and parred the final three holes to sew the seed of his victory.

    1947 Masters

Picking up his second Masters victory in 1947, Demaret was the first golfer in tournament history stay under par for all four tournament rounds. He shot a 69, 71, 70 and 71 for a two-stroke win over Byron Nelson.

    1950 Masters

1950 rounded out the trifecta of being the first golfer to obtain three Masters titles for Demaret. This final win did not come as easy to Mr. Wardrobe with Jim Ferrier carrying a four-stroke lead through the final round of the tournament. Demaret finished with 69 in the final round only to wait and see if this would be enough to win. Ferrier still carried a big lead going in to the back nine but finished up with a 41 to ruin his chance of winning. Demaret made birdies on three of the last six holes while Ferrier bogeyed five of the six.

Randy Russell, a reporter for The Chronicle, focused on Jimmy Demaret’s wardrobe as opposed to his golf stating, "Demaret, whose colorful garb made him look like an Easter egg rolling along the greensward, backed in to the victory that made him the first man in history to win The Masters® three times."
