aragon_winnersWow. What a thrilling grand prix.

Valentino Rossi took home first place and put a stop to Hondas winning grip at the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday, becoming just the third rider to win a race this year (can you say move over Marc Marquez?).

Rossi and teammate Jorge Lorenzo for Yamaha rode to a refreshing victory at Misano by finishing first and second (Dani Pedrosa following in third), as reigning champion Marquez could only muster 15th place after crashing with 19 laps to go.

The Spaniard, who led at the top of the table now falls to 74 points, a somewhat more realistic figure for the likes of Pedrosa and Rossi to hunt down. This marks the second in the past three races that Marquez has failed to win.

To say the least, it was a sensational weekend for Yamaha, with the pair now taking podium places in the last four consecutive races.

According to bleacherreport.com, “Sunday's victor also marked his win with an astonishing MotoGP achievement, becoming the first-ever rider to reach 5,000 career points, showing just how long The Doctor has reigned among this sport's elite icons.”

On another note, Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone also ensured it was a generally bright day for Italy, claiming fourth and fifth to give Ducati a bump in the manufacturers' standings.

With only five races left in the 2014 season, time is running out for any last-minute contenders to make their charge for the title. The time is now and Marquez has more than one rider breathing down his neck.

“Marquez can afford to slip up once or twice more and still find his way to the trophy with enough podium places in the remaining races, but he won't be taking any such chances in the search to continue his prolific start to life in MotoGP.” Source>>
