This question seems to be floating around the Internet lately, so we think it’s time to take a stab at it. Before the season started, the QuintEvents team made their own predictions. Which team got the most votes? The Carolina Panthers. Back then, not many of us actually thought it could happen, but at the rate they’re going now, it’s hard not to imagine the Panthers landing in the Super Bowl.
Now, Thanksgiving has passed and we have a little more to go off of than we did before. Some of the teams we predicted still have a chance; some most likely don’t. So who are the top contenders? Take a look below at the top three teams most likely to win Super Bowl 50.
New England Patriots
Of course, once again the Patriots are a favorite to win the Super Bowl. We predicted this early on, and our prediction remains the same. It was only a matter of time before the Patriots suffered a loss (props to the Broncos), but I don’t think the Patriots should be downgraded because of it.
With a coach like Bill Belichick leading the Patriots to the Super Bowl, it’s easy to picture them making it all the way to the end. He finds a way to win and has proven to be one of the best coaches in NFL history.
Plus, look at Brady. Even with team injuries and all the controversy, Tom Brady is one heck of a quarterback through it all. With 28 touchdown passes, a league-leading 3,600 passing yards and a 106.7 passer rating, this is the guy you want on your team and the one who will help carry you to the Super Bowl.
What about Rob Gronkowski? After being carted off the field with what appeared to be a serious injury, it looks like Gronk will return this season and be healthy in the playoffs. If this is the case, New England will be in the right position for a Super Bowl run.
The Panthers are now the only team in the NFL to remain perfect with an 11-0 record. Is 11-0 impressive? Absolutely. Does it mean they’ll make a Super Bowl run? There’s hope.
This is the best team in franchise history, no doubt. But the road to the Super Bowl will not be easy for the Panthers; in fact, they arguably have a tougher road than the Patriots to get there. It will be interesting to see how they do in the coming weeks, as they face the Atlanta Falcons twice – who traditionally play well against the them – as well as the New York Giants who are known for knocking off perfect teams.
The Panthers are certainly the team to beat in the NFC. They might not be the most talented team in the league, but they have the potential to be the best team in the league. Their defense is strong and Cam Newton is good at making plays, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the Panthers landed in the Super Bowl. Flashback to 2004, and we could have another Panthers-Patriots Super Bowl in 2016. #KeepPounding
If anyone could crash the Patriots-Panthers party, it would be the Cardinals. They’re definitely among the best teams in football. Yes, they lost to the Rams and the Steelers early on, but they’ve had big wins since including ones against the Seahawks and the Bengals. The Cardinals’ offense has been dangerous with a running game that has been a dominant force week after week.
The only problem is, their star running back Chris Johnson suffered a fractured tibia in last week’s game, which might have just cost the Cardinals the Super Bowl. When Johnson was in the backfield, the offense flourished, so without him the Cardinals’ offense could be in trouble. Ellington is expected to return after a turf toe injury to take Johnson’s place, and although he’s a talented running back, he has some big shoes to fill.
But even with this change, the Cardinals won’t stop rolling. Why? Carson. Palmer. He’s following right behind Brady with 27 touchdowns, 3,337 yards and a 105.9 passer rating. There’s no doubt he does everything he can to win games, and we can tell he wants a ring. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll get one.
