Will Rory McIlroy Get a Career Grand Slam at The Masters® 2018?

Rory McIlroy is arguably one of the best players in the world, with 20 worldwide victories and four major championship wins under his belt. He won the U.S. Open in 2011, the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014 and The Open Championship in 2014. However, he hasn’t been able to score himself a legendary Green Jacket. McIlroy has participated in The Masters® every year since 2009 and the best he’s done so far is come in fourth. A win at Augusta National® is all he needs to achieve a career grand slam. Can he do it?

To achieve a career grand slam in golf a player must win all four major championships at least once over their professional career. That is, The Open Championship, the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship and The Masters®, which is the only one McIlroy is missing. The Masters Golf Tournament

Rory McIlroy’s Chance to Win The Masters® 2018

2018 has been an incredibly up and down year for McIlroy. He has one win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational but then tied for 36th at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play. With this sort of play its hard to say what his chances of winning are at this year’s Masters.

Before his most recent win, McIlroy hadn’t won a tournament since the 2016 Tour Championship and spent much of 2017 battling a rib injury. He finished last year’s Masters Tournament tied for seventh place, which is one of his better scores over the past nine years. “I’ve always said, you can do as much preparation as you want in tournaments, but if you can’t step up and execute the shots, then preparation means nothing,” McIlroy states.

There are three other golfers who are contenders for a career grand slam. Phil Mickelson is looking to win the U.S. Open, Jordan Spieth needs a win at the PGA Championship, but Rory is the only one who needs The Masters® to complete this incredible achievement.

McIlroy said. “The three of us looking for the (career Grand Slam), Tiger (Woods) coming back, Justin Thomas playing so well, (Dustin Johnson) being the No. 1 player in the World, Jon Rahm. It’s good. I’m glad to be in the conversation.”

What Else is There for Rory McIlroy?

Although achieving a career grand slam is high on McIlroy’s goals list he has another attainable one he’d like to accomplish. He’d like to become the best European golfer and surpass Nick Faldo in that. With four major wins tucked into his pocket, a victory at Augusta National® or any of the major championships this year will bring him one closer to Faldo’s total of six wins.

A longer-term goal McIlroy would like to achieve is to be the greatest international golfer ever and to do this he’d have to surpass Gary Player’s nine major wins.
