As the beginning of the 2015 MotoGP™ season nears, a few questions come to mind: Who is going to be the best? What records will be broken? How fast will the new bikes ride?
Last year, Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone set a new speed record for MotoGP™ at the Italian Grand Prix with his Ducati GP14. He raced through a speed trap at 449.6 kph or 517.39 mph.
Honda Repsol’s Marc Marquez was the 2014 MotoGP™ season’s World Champion and new MotoGP™ legend after winning 13 of the 18 races. The young Spanish rider will return this season with Dani Pedrosa by his side to take on another 18-race circuit.
This season, with updated bikes and even more talent on the circuit, who knows what records may be broken next!
Riders with the Largest Number of Fastest Laps
Italy’s retired Giacomo Agostini holds the most fastest laps over all classes, winning the fastest lap 117 times in his career.Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi is a close second with a record of winning 89 fastest lap times over his still ongoing career. In third place with most number of fastest laps is Angel Nieto at 81.
In accordance to the team who has received the largest number of fastest laps won, Honda Repsol holds first place, followed by Yamaha and then Ducati.
Last year, Honda Repsol won the Constructor’s Championship, making them the fastest team for the 2014 season. With Marquez and Pedrosa once again their MotoGP™ riders, the team has great potential to continue to dominate this year.
As the various teams update their bikes and prepare for the 2015 season, however, the jury is still out on who will grab the fastest lap times this year.
Fast in Testing
Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo scored his fastest lap ever during Sepang testing Feb. 25 with a time of 1’59.437. Yamaha’s Rossi was close behind him, speeding up and completing a lap with the time of 1’59.833.
Suzuki’s Aleix Espargaro was equally impressive with his Suzuki’s team results. Both Espargaro and his teammate, rookie Maverick Vinales, felt confident with their team’s improved times.
Ducati was also equally impressed by its new bike’s performance. Andrea Iannone was one of the seven to get under the two minute mark during testing.
Despite the intense heat in Sepang, the riders and teams were able to make progress and will begin with some solid information to kick-start the 2015 MotoGP™ season.
