The Results of the 2016 NBA All-Star Weekend

All-Star-Logo-Horizontal.pngTalk about an exciting weekend in Toronto. From the NBA All-Star Saturday Night challenges to the big game on Sunday, fans had more fun than they could have ever imagined. There’s nothing like seeing the league’s best players compete against one another in various competitions and then on the court for the NBA All-Star game. It makes for an exciting, action-packed and memorable weekend.

Read below for a quick snippet of what happened throughout the 2016 NBA All-Star Weekend.

    NBA All-Star Saturday Night Recap

The 2016 NBA All-Star Saturday Night was probably the greatest one we have ever seen. To say it was a success this year would be an understatement. It was epic.

We saw quite the upset in the Skills Challenge, a competition which demonstrates a player’s ballhandling, passing and perimeter shooting abilities. The Minnesota Timberwolves rookie center Karl-Anthony Towns beat out Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas by knocking down his third 3-point attempt in the final round. This underdog let everyone know that big men can match up with guards skill-wise.

In the 3-Point Shootout, five of the eight contestants finished with 20 points or more in the first round, which is typically the high, not the average. The “Splash Brothers” did what they do best – the title came down to the two Golden State sharpshooters Klay Thompson and Steph Curry. Thompson beat out teammate Curry (the defending champion) in an incredible display as he finished the final round with 27 points, four more than Curry.

Now for the typical highlight of the weekend: The Slam Dunk Contest. At first, we weren’t sure what to expect as it featured defending champion Zach LaVine along with some rather unconventional choices: Andre Drummonds, Will Barton and Aaron Gordon. LaVine was the favorite to repeat as a back-to-back champion…until Gordon locked and loaded.

He stayed right with LaVine and then had a combined six straight 50-point dunks during the double-overtime dunk-off. In his most insane dunk of the night, he brought the ball under his legs as if he was sitting down in mid-air and then slammed it over the Magic’s mascot.

Now, LaVine still ended up being the champion – and rightfully so. After all, he dunked from the free-throw line three times, once between his legs. The entire contest was amazing; it was probably the best we have ever seen. Can we see a repeat between these two next year? We sure hope so.

    NBA All-Star Game Recap

nba_all_star_game_2016.jpg-large.jpegThe Air Canada Centre in Toronto was packed on Sunday night for the NBA All-Star Game where we saw the league’s best pitted against each other and where we bid farewell to Kobe Bryant.

It was a record-breaking night as the Western Conference destroyed the Eastern Conference 196-173. The 196 points scored by the West were an NBA All-Star Game record as were the combined teams’ total points of 369.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook won his second consecutive All-Star Game MVP award. He led the West with 31 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. He took six of the possible 12 MVP votes – Indiana Pacers forward Paul George and Los Angeles Lakers forward Kobe Bryant each gathered two.

Paul George had a huge night for the East with a game-high 41 points, including a record-setting nine 3-pointers.  He fell just short of Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 42 points, set back in 1962. Kobe Bryant finished his All-Star career with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
